How to Choose a Container: 20ft, 40ft, or High Cube?

For businesses involved in China import and export, choosing the right container size is essential. Selecting the wrong container can result in unused space, higher logistics costs, or difficulties loading cargo efficiently.

The three most commonly used container types are 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft High Cube. So, which one is best suited to your shipping needs?

What Are the Differences Between 20ft, 40ft, and High Cube Containers?

20ft Container

A 20ft container has a capacity of approximately 33 CBM. It is suitable for medium-volume cargo, particularly relatively heavy goods such as machinery, construction materials, and industrial products. If your cargo has a relatively low volume but high weight, a 20ft container can be an efficient option.

40ft Container

A 40ft container has a capacity of approximately 67 CBM, nearly twice that of a 20ft container. It is more suitable for large-volume cargo such as furniture, textiles, household goods, and retail products in large quantities.

40ft High Cube Container

A 40ft High Cube (40HC) container has approximately the same length and width as a standard 40ft container but offers additional height. Its capacity can reach approximately 76 CBM. This type is suitable for cargo that requires extra space, particularly high-volume but relatively lightweight goods.

How to Choose the Right Container?

Don't focus on cargo volume alone. There are several factors to consider before booking a container.

1. Volume and Weight

Calculate the total cargo volume after packing. Also, consider the overall weight of your shipment. Cargo measuring 30 CBM does not automatically mean it is suitable for a 20ft container, as packaging dimensions and cargo weight can affect the actual loading capacity.

2. Type of Goods

Different types of goods have different loading requirements. Furniture, machinery, electronics, textiles, and raw materials may require different loading arrangements inside a container.

If your goods are fragile or require special handling, inform your freight forwarder in advance.

3. Packaging Dimensions

The dimensions of your goods after packing are crucial. Large cartons, pallet usage, or inefficient packaging can significantly increase the total cargo volume.

Therefore, always use the dimensions of the fully packed goods when calculating your container requirements.

4. Shipping Costs

A larger container does not necessarily mean higher shipping costs if its space can be utilized efficiently. For example, when cargo volume is sufficiently large, shipping in one 40ft container may be more cost-effective than arranging several smaller shipments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is a 40ft container always better than a 20ft container?

No. A 20ft container is more suitable for relatively heavy cargo with medium volume, while a 40ft container is better suited for large-volume shipments.

What is the difference between a 40ft and a 40ft High Cube container?

The main difference is the height. A High Cube container offers additional vertical space, resulting in a higher overall cargo capacity.

Do all goods imported from China need to be shipped in containers?

No. For smaller shipments, LCL (Less than Container Load) can be an alternative to booking an entire container.

What information should I prepare before choosing a container?

Prepare details about the type of goods, quantity, dimensions after packing, total CBM, weight, and origin and destination addresses. This information will help your freight forwarder provide a more accurate recommendation.
